The 3 C’s of Democracy, Cirque du Democracy Volunteer Fair!
This past Sunday, 51 Democrats from the Texas House left their beloved state, knowing that without enough members for a quorum, the Republicans cannot pass Trump's unconstitutional, baldly racist plan to steal five US House seats. These representatives make $7200 a year. They're risking their full-time jobs, and even arrest. They left behind their families. Bomb threats have been called into a hotel where some are staying.
When Republicans accused Democrats of running away from their jobs, Representative Ann Johnson said to a CBS reporter, “Abandoning your job is going to Cancun in the middle of a deadly freeze. Abandoning your job is cutting health care when people need access. Abandoning your job is cutting public education when we already have one of the worst education systems in the nation. What we are doing (by denying a quorum) is the fundamental protection by our Founding Fathers in the Texas Constitution. When Donald Trump called Georgia Republicans and said, ‘I just need you to find me 11,000 votes,’ they said ‘No, sir. That’s a step too far.’ But when he called Texas Republicans and said, ‘I need you to steal me five seats,’ they said, ‘Does July work for you?’ Well, it doesn’t work for us as Texas Democrats.”
Representative James Talarico said, “Trump is trying to rig the midterm elections right before our eyes. But first he’ll have to come through us.”
This is the kind of fight we want to see from our leaders. These Texas Democrats have a spine! Celebrate them with thank you posts we created on social media HERE. Whether this ultimately stops the gerrymandering from moving forward is not the point. We don't only fight when we know we’ll win. Ben Sheehan’s book, “What Does the Constitution Actually Say?” hilariously lays out the facts of our core founding document, and he’ll do the same in person at this delicious in-person event, where The Chocolate Dispensary will be hosting a curated craft chocolate tasting.
