DOOM-SKIPPING AND HOPE-SCROLLING
When it comes to doomscrolling, I’m just as guilty as the next. In the lead-up to the vote on the GOP tax abomination, I followed every twist and turn in my feeds. And of course, I was heartbroken when the bill passed.
But there’s more than one way to scroll your socials. Instead of doom-scrolling and spiraling into a pit of negativity, try one of these:
Doom-skipping – Every now and then, I check out entirely. Not just for a few minutes or hours. I’m talking a day or two, sometimes longer. Zero news consumption. Does wonders for my mental health.
Doom-skimming – Sometimes, I just do a super-quick pass of the news. Skim the headlines, skip the articles, and then I’m out. 5 minutes is probably too long. Doom-skimming is like 2-3 minutes, tops.
Hope-scrolling – There’s always some upbeat, positive news. You gotta scroll past all the doomsday stuff, way way down the page. But the good news is always there. Saw a piece in the NYT about how the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia was recently protected from mining when the nonprofit Conservation Fund bought 8,000 acres. Hope is out there. You just have to look for it.
At the end of the day, the fate of our country doesn’t rest on how up-to-date I am on every single one of the latest Washington developments. But it does rely on getting as many likely blue voters registered as possible – and to the polls. That’s the prize to keep our eyes on.
So scroll, don’t scroll, semi-scroll, pseudo-scroll. Do whatever it takes to get you through the night. ‘Cause no matter what the headlines say, we CAN win the 2026 midterms – in historic fashion – and reclaim the Senate and White House in 2028…if we keep at the text banks, and postcarding, and in-person registering, and social storming.
LFG, y'all, LFG.
