Hollywood Needs Heroes
John Lewis day of action, bonus protests, and BYOP!
It all sounds like something straight out of a post-apocalyptic summer blockbuster:
4,000 members of the National Guard and 700 US marines are sent to Los Angeles to quell street protests. Troops guard federal buildings. LA police escort ICE agents, who drive around the city in unmarked vehicles. Some are wearing plainclothes, some are wearing full militarized gear. They roll up, hop out, grab people, throw them into vans, and drive away.
Absolutely no due process. Totally lawless.
People don't know why they're being taken away. Their families don't know where they're going.
Are they being arrested by actual federal agents, deputized corrections officers, bounty hunters, or maniacs pretending to be ICE?
Innocent US citizens and hard-working, law-abiding immigrants are swept up in brutal raids. Others cower in their homes, afraid to go outside.
The downtown street protests have mostly quieted down, but the city remains under attack – from a rogue federal government.
If only it were just a movie. Sadly, Hollywood is living through this nightmare – along with cities and towns across the country.
But there are also tons of everyday heroes. In Bell, CA, a fire truck blocked ICE vehicles, while the community flooded the streets to obstruct the raids. In San Diego, a community shouted "Shame!" as they chased ICE agents, who retreated and ran away. In Pasadena, CA, a peaceful – yet boisterous! – protest outside a hotel forced the ICE agents staying there to leave.
And you can be a hero too. Not in a big-screen blockbuster. But in your town. In your community. Even in your home.
You can volunteer with Field Team 6. Do a textbank. Write some postcards. Join a peaceful protest. Donate to support the work. Help us register Democratic voters so we can win key elections this year and in 2026.
If we all pitch in and pull together, we can rewrite this screenplay, make sure the bad guys don't win, and save democracy, together.
