LISTEN TO THE BOSS
No Kings, GrowASpine.org, Summit recordings!
The Boss is back on the road. At 75, Bruce Springsteen is still out to Prove it All Night. At a recent concert in Manchester, England, he had a few things to say about the Trump-Musk admin: "In my home, the America I love, the America I've written about that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration...We ask all who believe in democracy...to rise with us. Raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring."
When the Boss tells you to stand up and speak out, guess what: you listen. So stand up and speak out on social media. Call your elected representatives. Textbank. Phonebank. And use your voice to make the change happen.
Bruce goes on to give a little civics lesson: "The last check on power, after the checks and balances of government have failed, are the people, you and me...Now that's all that stands between democracy and authoritarianism...all we've really got is each other."
And when the boss tells you to join hands and work together with your brothers-and-sisters-in-arms, you do it. Because we're not in this alone. We have an army of dedicated believers, willing to do whatever it takes. So join a rally or protest. Send some voter registration postcards. Encourage your fellow FT6ers and be encouraged by them.
Bruce continues his sermon on the stage: "In America, they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent. This is happening now. In America, the richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world's poorest children...this is happening now...they're rolling back historic Civil Rights legislation...they're abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators...they're removing residents off American streets...This is all happening now."
Bruce ain't gonna sugarcoat it. These are dark goddamn times with a lot of extremely messed up shit going down. But Bruce believes in us – he always has. And he ends with a message of hope and faith: "The America that I've sung to you about for 50 years is real, and regardless of its faults, is a great country with a great people. So we'll survive this moment. Now, I have hope because I believe in the truth of what the great American writer James Baldwin said. He said, 'In this world, there isn't as much humanity as one would like. But there's enough.'"
So if you're feeling overwhelmed by the news, if you're feeling downhearted because of the long road ahead, then cue up "No Surrender" and remember you're part of the Field Team 6 family:
“We made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in the stormy night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender"
