REDISCOVER LOVE

There’s this myth we tell ourselves – that the country is divided by left and right, urban and rural, coast and heartland. We blame the map, or the media, or the money. But really, our fractures come from something much deeper: a clash of motives.
Some people choose fear, or fall victim to it. With fear, outsiders become threats. Change becomes danger. Vulnerability equals weakness, and curiosity could get you killed. Fear kills nuance, reducing entire groups to stereotypes, dehumanizing people. From that poisoned soil, hate grows easily.
Others are nourished by love, which opens us up and blesses everything it touches. Love relaxes. Love wants to play. Love comes with a sense that difference is not danger, but depth. That our society grows richer and stronger when more voices are welcomed, not fewer. That as the Roman playwright Terence wrote: I am human, nothing human is alien to me.
Fear builds a wall. Love builds a table and invites everyone for a meal. Our future depends on which impulse we choose.
Unfortunately, we’re not immune to the forces we condemn. Even with the best intentions, we can slip into contempt of those we don’t agree with. The true test isn’t loving the people who agree with us. It’s refusing to become what we’re fighting against.
So this holiday season, here’s our wish: Let’s rediscover our own blazing core, where joy, courage, and unconditional love live. And let’s remind ourselves that we are not fighting for a side. We are fighting for a better world for all of us. Every single American. We do not fear anyone, we do not hate anyone. We love, we reach out, we connect, we connect, we connect.
This is how we’ll save America, and help her to become something bigger, better, and brighter.
