2024 Cycle Impact Report Revealed, Behind the Scenes Needs, No Kings II
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be one of the featured guests for Field Team 6’s first-ever fundraiser event in New York City. It was in the Village, and as soon as the event ended, I walked outside and my phone gave me the news that Kimmel had been canceled.
I walked around the Village for an hour, nauseous at the fascist threshold that had been crossed… and wound up in Washington Square Park.
The sun had just gone down, but the sky was still light. It was the perfect temperature. Music from a boombox. Fountains. Skateboarders. Someone in the distance juggling glowing bowling pins. I heard people speaking Spanish, French, Hebrew, another language I couldn’t identify. People of all races. Young people gossiping and laughing. Old people walking a dog.
This is how every foreigner in the world dreams that America might be… but this was no dream. This was real and I wasn’t just observing it, I was part of it. It took hundreds of years to build - this multicultural democracy where we’re not just peacefully coexisting; we’re living our best lives, woven together like muscles and bones in one body politic. That park was filled with Americans.
Washington Square Park is a special place, but there are lots of special places all across this country, and they’re all filled with Americans. What does an American look like? Like a human being from anywhere in the world. We are that big! We are that open! We are that beautiful an idea, and many times, in many places, we are that beautiful a reality!
That kind of powerful beauty is worth fighting for.
So stay hopeful - stay focused - and keep fighting the good fight.
