Ballot curing! BYOP Thank yous! January Strategy Briefing!

What’s the word for when you want to vomit, cry, scream, and explode at the same time? There must be one in German.

When Trump was elected in 2016, I gave up my 18-year TV writing career to fight in the Resistance all day, every day. And all of us changed our lives, becoming volunteers, activists, organizers, donors, founders. Millions of us across the country changed our lives in ways big and small, in ways that added up to an against-all-odds 8 year election-winning streak that was only broken now.

So here’s the good news: we don’t have to start from scratch. The Resistance is a fully operational national alliance of thousands of progressive organizations, uniting the grassroots, constituency groups, unions, nonprofits, the party, and more. We are stronger than ever. And we have now trained for eight years – two full army stints. So while yes, we are nauseous, gutpunched, and bruised, that does not change the fact: We are the mightiest organizing force in generations.

And it is a huge understatement to say: Field Team 6 could not be more proud to be the national leader in partisan voter registration. 

If you cannot fight now, we get it. Healing is not linear. Take whatever time you need, when you need it. Protect your physical and mental health. And resolve to harden your happiness like you harden a target. Because it is precious, and it is a target. 

We will all need to develop the healthy detachment of a therapist, who can hold space for pain without being dragged down into the pain… the resolve of the Ukrainian soldiers who in the face of death radioed “F*ck off, Russian warship”... the indomitable courage of Stacey Abrams, who took from defeat the seeds of massive future victory.

And for those who can fight today, who need to fight today, we have ways to help! 

• Ballot curing (by phone or in person) in the remaining razor-tight House races 

• Free BYOP texting for two January special elections in Virginia State Senate districts that could determine whether abortion rights are protected in the state

• Heartfelt thank you BYOP texts to our 32,000 volunteers

For the next two years, we will be nimble, creative, targeted, and effective, and we will register the Democrats we need every day, week, month, and year, so that in 2026 we can take back the House and make progress in the Senate – and in 2028 we can take back the rest and defeat Trump and MAGA fascism forever. With all the love in our hearts, even through the tears, we keep fighting. Sunshine through rain makes a rainbow.
