Urgency and agency. Those are the two secret ingredients to organizing others and motivating ourselves. Everything we love is in danger, and you are the one who can save it. On voter drives since 2017, our single best conversation-starter for registering new Democrats has been, “Can you help me save the world from Trump?” In one sentence, we create a high-stakes narrative with you as the hero. And it works! Why? Because its premise – you can help me save the world – is entirely true.
And that’s what the news always leaves out. It feeds us urgency. But it leaves us passive, helpless observers. Only activism gives us agency.
Democracy is rule by the people. And it is only the people who can and will save this democracy. As activists, we do the outreach that brings people in and makes our democracy more representative. Democracy is not just the end – it’s also the means.
So let’s continue to beat back apathy with empathy – overcome suppression with registration – and out-organize their cheating, just as we have for the last 8 years.
How? With agency and urgency.
