We don’t give up.
When our Phone Bank Trainer Lynn heard that volunteers in a certain state were calling a larger-than-usual number of people who had died, she didn’t give up. She trained her volunteers to give condolences and pivot to asking the relative about themselves, if they needed to register to vote. They found a surprising number of them did – and wound up registering many more Democrats!
When our volunteers showed electric enthusiasm for texting, but we had no money to text, Field Team 6 didn’t give up. Our Chief Strategist Cory brainstormed a way to jerry-rig our phone banking system to create a free text platform. Our innovative tech wizard friend Ranga came up with the first iteration. And our genius volunteers Alicia and Michaela have refined, streamlined, and superpowered it in the last two years. Our tireless, relentlessly positive Text Czar Deb has led hundreds of “Bring Your Own Phone” (BYOP) trainings to build an army of texters. Now Field Team 6 volunteers are sending almost 100,000 free texts every week.
Our super volunteer Cecilia wanted to canvass in swing district CA-22 (for a partner organization), but the heat rose to a sweltering 112 degrees. She didn’t give up. She helped organize a convoy of “cooling cars,” who would follow the canvassers like pacers in a marathon, offering not just air conditioning relief, but cold washcloths, water, and Gatorade to keep them going! And they knocked 700 doors that weekend!
Field Team 6 Donor, Organizer and Co-Czar of Phone Banking, Susan, planned to throw a big fundraising party for Field Team 6 – what she didn’t plan on was having to get a total knee replacement 2 weeks earlier. But she didn’t give up. Using a crutch, she made her way to the front of the huge crowd she’d gathered, and before she had spoken a word, dared them to not be inspired. That day, she raised $16,000 for our voter registration efforts!
Field Team 6 volunteer Dan moved to Pennsylvania to do swing state activism. He learned that registering voters in person can be a low numbers game. He did not give up. He has done a voter drive four days a week for months now, and canvasses on the weekends while also leading our phone banking program as Co-Czar. He has now personally registered hundreds of new Democrats and independents to vote.
Voter Drive Trainer/Leader Julie Glade sits on the bipartisan Election Board of Cherokee County, Georgia, where she saw Republicans attempt to stage a partisan takeover of election administration. But she did not give up. Instead, she helped raise awareness of what was going on, and drew the attention of both Rolling Stone and The Rachel Maddow Show. And the Republicans backed down!
If there is one thing above all else that enables us to do amazing, groundbreaking work, it is this: we don’t give up. And neither do you! Keep volunteering and donating – and together, we will save this democracy in four months!
